Canada-focused NexGen Energy has secured the final federal approval required to develop its flagship Rook I project, clearing the way for construction of what is expected to become one of the world’s largest uranium mines.

The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission has approved the project’s environmental assessment and issued a Licence to Prepare Site and Construct, allowing NexGen to proceed with full construction of the uranium development in the Athabasca basin, in Saskatchewan, Canada.

The decision follows a final two-part commission hearing process that concluded on February 12 and comes after the project received provincial environmental assessment approval in November 2023.

With all regulatory approvals now secured, NexGen plans to begin construction in the summer of 2026, with development expected to take about four years.

Once in operation, the mine is expected to produce up to 30-million pounds a year of uranium, representing more than 20% of current global uranium fuel supply and over half of Western-world supply.
